HOSHINOYA Karuizawa

Restoration and Management in Anticipation of Future Forest and Garden Growth

This facility is adjacent to the “Karuizawa National Wild Bird Sanctuary Forest” and has adopted an operational model in which the relationship between people and nature itself is a subject of design.

We are building a positive cycle in which enhancements to the quality of accommodation experience lead to improvements in the natural environment, and these improvements further enhance the value of the accommodation experience.
This cycle is achieved through the following three designs:

Behavioral design

Design to ensure that users’ actions contribute to environmental friendliness without excess effort

Spatial design

Spatial design that takes into consideration both human comfort and ecological impact

Operational design

Optimization of environmental impact and value through longer stays, vehicle restrictions, etc.

This has resulted in an improvement in some natural environments compared to thirty years ago, despite an increase in the number of visitors, and we are in the process of quantitatively confirming these changes.

In addition, the involvement of wildlife and plant specialists ensures both accuracy in environmental management and experience value for visitors.

This model is an operational approach that mitigates the trade-off between environmental protection and profitability and optimizes for both.

Iriomote Hotel

Cyclical Value Creation Model Utilizing Local Resources (Peach Pineapple Project)

Peach Pineapple from Iriomote Island is a very rare agricultural product produced only in a limited area, and is a resource strongly dependent on the unique natural environment of the region.

This facility is working with local farmers to produce Peach Pineapples by utilizing food scraps from the hotel to generate compost and improve the soil. In this way, we strive to reduce waste and recycle resources, while also contributing to local agriculture.
In addition, through harvesting experiences and seasonal events, we offer the attractions of local resources as an accommodation experience, thereby enhancing and differentiating our experience value.

This initiative contributes to sustainable cooperation with the local community and brand value enhancement as a cyclical model that integrates the conservation and utilization of regional resources and the creation of experience value.
